The air craft carrier Ark Royal was the third vessel of the Royal Navy to bear the name. She was launched at the Birkenhead shipyard of Cammell Laird on the 13th April 1937. HMS Ark Royal was involved in the sinking of the German Battleship Bismark, but later while on Malta convoy duty was torpedoed by the German submarine U-81.
